A wicker magazine rack designed by Carl Auböck II and made by the Carl Auböck workshop during the 1950s.
The beautifully patinated frame of this brass magazine rack supports a tightly woven wicker sling large enough to hold a handful of magazines, books, or records.
Throughout the 1950s, the Austrian government subsidised the manufacture of wickerwork, which was often undertaken by war veterans that were left physically challenged or blinded by the war.* Woven tables, cane wrapped stems and handles were, and still are, a recurring design detail in both vintage and contemporary pieces from the Carl Auböck workshop. From the addition of cane to the touch-points of the “Flat Iron” Bookends, or the neatly wrapped handle of the #3632-2 'Watering-can', the use of cane heightens the already tactile nature of these beautifully weighted objects whilst protecting the brass from tarnishing.
