Pair of Plant Stands
Josef Hoffmann, C. 1905

Description:

A pair of two-tier bentwood plant stands designed by Josef Hoffmann and produced by Gebrüder Thonet, Austria, circa 1905-1910.
The stands are made of solid beech that have been stained a dark-mahogany colour. Their form is essentially a variety of circles and squares which are shapes that Hoffmann often incorporated into his work. However, no element of the design is just a square or a circle. For example, the square section timber used in the frame bends into an arch at the top, whilst the planks of wood used bow at every opportunity bare one. The exception is the edge beneath where three circular holes can be found on the sides that flank the bottom shelf. However, the straight edge here helps to highlight the full circles, which are the detail that is perhaps most visually satisfying and most redolent of Hoffmann’s work.
The stands are in excellent condition for their age having been fully but faithfully restored. Each stand stamped Thonet.
