Bertil Vallien
"Tree of Life"
Standing Candelabrum
Sweden, 1970s
Description:
A large, iron, floor-standing candelabrum designed by Bertil Vallien for one of the leading glass manufacturers in Sweden during the mid-20th century, Boda.
The hammered, vegetal form of this substantial wrought iron candelabrum is indicative of the influence of Swedish folklore and natural forms in Vallien's work. Pressed glass roundels hang beneath the base of each circular candle sconce, whilst hammered and incised leaves adorn the branches.
The design was part of Vallien's 'Helicon' series, designed for Boda Smide (the metalworking department of Boda) during the early 1970s, and among collectors is referred to as the "Tree of Life".
A hanging version of this design is also available here.
