Marthe Armitage X Sigmar
Kaare Klint 4118 Sofa

£12,500

This reupholstered Kaare Klint 4118 sofa was the centrepiece of our collaboration with Marthe Armitage Prints for London Design Festival 2023.

This Model 4118 sofa, designed by Kaare Klint during the 1930s and made by cabinetmaker Rud Rasmussen in Denmark during the 1940s, showcases the unreleased print, "Lobby", designed by Marthe Armitage.

“Lobby” takes its name from the lobby of Marthe’s Georgian riverside home in Strand-on-the-Green, where it was first hung. Marthe intended to print the design on the floor, instead of the press, which allowed her to explore a much freer style of drawing. The result was a rich botanical pattern comprised of hydrangea flowers and leaves, interwoven with ferns.

For the reupholstery of the Model 4118 Klint sofa, we selected Lobby in the ‘Fauve’ colour way, which foregrounds Armitage’s original design against a rich terracotta red, with accents of a light yellow and soft blue. We selected this colour way as a subtle homage to colour palette of Klint’s ‘Greek Fabric’, designed in 1932, which was a woven stripe fabric of alternating red, blue and white stripes.

The straight sides and high back of the 4118 sofa perfectly display the full repeat of Armitage’s Lobby print. The final result blends the intricacy and complexity of Armitage’s botanical design with the angular simplicity of Kaare Klint.
