Large Walnut Tree Trunk Table
Carl Auböck II, 1940s

£14,000
Description:

A substantially sized tree trunk table designed and made by the Werkstätte Auböck in the 1940s. Carl Auböck II, responsible for the design of this series, graduated from the Bauhaus under Johannes Itten (a Swiss expressionist painter, designer and theorist) and was an abstract painter before taking over the family workshop in the 1940s. This piece can be seen as a translation of Auböck II's ideas about art into a three-dimensional object, which resultantly straddles the boundary between art and design.
The colour and movement in the grain of the 'haunch' of walnut is mesmerising. Each of the three brass legs have are heavily patinated and are capped with black rubber feet. All legs stamped Made in Austria.
