High Back Chair Great Britain, early 1900
Description
An Art and Crafts high back chair in hand carved oak dating to the beginning of 1900.
The chair has a very slender and peculiar design reminiscent of Charles Rennie Mackintosh pieces; the seat, covered in hand woven rush, narrows towards the back, the cross-section of the front legs is circular while the back ones have a rectangular transection, which turns into circular at the seat level. The six stretchers all taper towards both ends and have three grooves in the middle. The same decorative motive is repeated twice on the stiles. Between them runs a splat which ends into a top rail holed by a sort of window shaped as a segmental arch.
In overall very good conditions.
