Rare 1940s Chamberstick
Carl Auböck II
Description:
An extremely rare walnut, white metal & rope chamberstick designed and made by Carl Auböck II in the 1940’s.
This chamberstick serves as an indication of the second Carl Auböck’s original vision for his family’s workshop following his education at the Bauhaus.
One of the Bauhaus' fundamental principles was to combine innovative design with traditional craftspersonship. Auböck II closely observed this ethos throughout his career and this chamberstick, certainly, adheres to this philosophy.
The chamberstick is formed from clean geometric shapes, which reflect the Bauhaus' commitment to production without sacrificing artistic integrity. A circle and cut cone are found in the turned walnut base. A semi-circle and rectangle in the handle, and the spike to affix a candle is a cone.
This usable Modernist design reflects an industrial aesthetic while maintaining a sense of elegance and simplicity through the actuality of being handmade.
