"Tree of Life" Chandelier
Bertil Vallien
Sweden, 1970s
Description:
A four-armed, iron and glass chandelier designed by Bertil Vallien for one of the leading glass manufacturers in Sweden during the mid-20th century, Boda Smide.
The hammered, vegetal form of this substantial wrought iron chandelier is indicative of the influence of Swedish folklore and natural forms in Vallien's work. Pressed glass roundels hang beneath the base of each circular candle sconce, whilst hammered and incised leaves adorn the branches.
The design was part of Vallien's 'Helicon' series, designed for the Boda Smide workshop during the early 1970s, and among collectors is referred to as the "Tree of Life".
